U.S.'S Tillerson, National Security Adviser to Visit Turkey in Coming Weeks
U.S. Secretary of State Rex Tillerson and National Security Advisor H.R. McMaster are expected to visit Turkey in the next two weeks, Turkish media reported on Tuesday (February 6).
Turkish media outlets cited the country’s diplomatic sources as confirming that McMaster is expected to visit Turkey over the weekend, while a visit by Secretary of State Rex Tillerson is set for next week.
The official visits come while Turkish troops and allied rebels have been battling their way, for the past few weeks, into Syria's Afrin canton, which is defended by the American-backed People's Protection Units (YPG).
The campaign has caused ripples of concern among Turkey's NATO allies, especially the United States, who is still working closely with the YPG to defeat Islamic State (ISIS) in Syria.
YPG has been the key ally of Turkey's fellow NATO member, the United States, in the fight against Islamic State (ISIS), playing a key role in pushing the extremists out of their Syrian strongholds.
