Iraqi Defense Minister Survives Isis Attack Near Qayyarah
Iraqi Defense Minister Khalid al-Obeidi survived an attack by the Islamic State (ISIS) after his convoy was attacked by the militants with mortars south of Mosul.
The Iraqi Defense Ministry issued a statement saying the convoy of the defense chief was hit by an ISIS mortar attack as they were passing near the village of Imam Gharbi near the Qayyarah air base.
The statement said the convoy’s security responded to fire and clashed with the source of the attack, adding that the attack did not result in any casualties, only damage to the vehicles.
Obeidi arrived in Makhmour on Monday for meetings with commanders on the ground, as Iraqi security forces push closer towards Mosul.
The defense minister’s visit to Makhmour was in order to closely monitor preparations for the operation to regain Mosul from the control of ISIS.
