Jaafari: Kurdistan Is An Important Part Of Iraq
Iraqi Foreign Minister Ibrahim al-Jaafari arrived in Erbil on Wednesday (April 12) where he said the Kurdistan Region is an important part of Iraq and urged resumed cooperation between Erbil and Baghdad.
Jaafari and his accompanying delegation met with Kurdish Prime Minister Nechirvan Barzani and discussed ties between the Kurdistan Region and Baghdad, an official Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) website reported.
The Iraqi FM said there is a need for continued cooperation between both sides, which will lead to the defeat of the Islamic State (ISIS).
Barzani encouraged dialogue as a way to tackle pending issues between Baghdad and Erbil, stating the KRG’s ambition is, along with the Iraqi army, to root out ISIS from Iraq.
ISIS’ seizure of Mosul, in June 2014 as it swept across the Syrian border and declared a modern "caliphate", exposed the failings of a governing system defined largely by ethno-sectarian party patronage.
