Masoud Barzani Congratulates Iraqi Pm For Victory Over Isis In Mosul
Masoud Barzani issued a statement on Monday (July 10) saying he expressed congratulations to Iraqi Prime Minister Haidar al-Abadi for victory achieved over Islamic State (ISIS) in the war-torn city of Mosul.
Iraq announced on Sunday victory against ISIS in the northern city, the country's second largest, from where the group declared a self-styled caliphate three years ago.
Abadi arrived in the city on Sunday and congratulated the armed forces after nearly nine months of urban warfare came to an end to jihadist rule in the city.
The official website of the Kurdistan Region Presidency (KRP) reported that Barzani had a telephone conversation with Prime Minister Haidar al-Abadi to praise the “great victory” over ISIS.
“During the phone call President Barzani congratulated the great victory achieved in the fight to secure Mosul, which is outcome of cooperation and sacrifice by Peshmerga and Iraqi army,” the KRP website reported.
“This great victory has been recorded by the blood of our people,” he added, reiterating continuous cooperation between Erbil and Baghdad.
The battle for Mosul - by far the largest city to fall under the militants' control - has left large areas in ruins, killed thousands of civilians and displaced nearly one million people. The group still controls territory in Iraq and is expected to revert to conventional insurgent tactics as it loses ground.
