SDF Makes Advances against Isis in Raqqa's Old City
Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) and U.S. -led coalition are making progress in their fight to regain control of Raqqa, according to SDF fighters in the city.
SDF soldier Dara Kubani said on Saturday (August 19) they had surrounded Islamic State (ISIS) from four sides and hoped to liberate the city "in the near future."
Dominated by the People's Protection Units (YPG), a Kurdish commander said last week the SDF had ISIS fighters surrounded in central Raqqa.
The assault on ISIS' de facto capital in Syria, which started in early June, overlapped with the campaign to drive Islamic State from the Iraqi city of Mosul where ISIS was defeated last month.
