Turkish Coast Guard Intercepts 96 Refugees at Sea

Turkish coast guards intercepted some 96 migrants in two different operations as they sailed to Greece from the west coast of Turkey, Turkish coast guard said in a statement on Saturday (September 9).

Footage released by Turkey's coast guard showed migrants on board dinghies as they sailed in the Aegean Sea. The vessels were intercepted and the refugees were taken off.

Turkey agreed to stem the record flow of migrants to Europe in 2016 in exchange for billions of euros in aid from the European Union and the lifting of short-term visa requirements for Turkish citizens wishing to enter the bloc.

Turkey is home to the world's largest refugee population, housing some 2.7 million Syrians and 300,000 Iraqis.
