PUK Spokesman: Former Iraqi President Jalal Talabani Dies in Berlin at Age 84
Jalal Talabani, the former President of Iraq and the Secretary-General of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK), passed away in Berlin at the age of 84 on Tuesday (October 3), PUK Spokesman Saadi Ahmed Pira said.
Jalal Husamudin Shukrulla, known as Mam Jalal, was born on November 12, 1933. He graduated in the College of Law at the University of Baghdad.
In 1976, Talabani along with some of his fellows established the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan. He then became the secretary general of the party.
He was chosen as the president of Iraq on July 24, 2015 after the fall of the Baath Regime led by Saddam Hussein. He was the first Kurd to become the president of Iraq.
Talabani left Iraq to Germany for medical treatment on December 18, 2012 after he suffered from a stroke. He returned to the Kurdistan Region nearly 19 months after receiving medical treatment in Germany.
