Around 500 French Jihadists Still In Iraq, Syria: Foreign Minister
French Foreign Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian announced on Friday (December 8) that about 500 French militants who joined Islamic State (ISIS) are still in Iraq and Syria.
"There are around 500 [jihadists] who are there [in Iraq and Syria] and who will be captured or scattered elsewhere," said Le Drian on the air of the BFM TV channel.
"The return to France by their own means is extremely difficult," he noted, without further details.
France is a main partner in the U.S.-led coalition against Islamic State (ISIS) helping Baghdad to fight the militants who seized parts of Iraq and Syria in 2014.
On Saturday, Iraqi Prime Minister announced victory against Islamic State after the end of a three-year war by Iraqi forces to drive them out of the country.
